Happiness is Being

I finally step out of my self
And walk the miles to you.

I have worn the cloak of winter for too long

And lived on dried raisins gathered in the summer

Many seasons ago

Living is empty when the heart is dry and stale

And memory becomes a bad brew of ale

Happiness comes from being –

My epiphany from intoxication on fumes of dried tears

Remnants of aged agony

From the cellar of sorrow.

In a drunken haze, I stagger into wisdom:

It takes courage to be naked.

I undress in sobriety

From the soul out,

And feel my manhood shrivel from the cold winds

Of your eyes

I step out of the pile of me

And take unsteady steps in your direction

Barefooted.

Naked.

A walk of shame

Towards redemption.

So of late, I saw a classic; ‘The Princess Diaries II’ starring the amazing trio of Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine for like the umpteenth time. Only this time, I’d made a mental note of a line from a letter left Princess Mia by the King of Genovia, her late father; as she struggled to come to terms with the newest, most challenging reality of having been chosen to be crowned Queen and it reads thus…’The brave may not live forever but the cautious never live at all’! She’d been pretty adamant bout stepping up to the plate but after being privy to the contents of that letter; that singular event marked a turning point of sorts for her and with it, a strong resolve to be the best ever Queen. The place of courage in the school of life, can never be over-emphasized!

‘To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable, to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength’ says Criss Jam. I especially like that this Narrator, having fought and won the greatest battle of all….against self, comes to a realization….an epiphany that it does take lotsa courage to go through life and to live each day. Moreso, he/she decides to make concerted efforts to remain and be happy, no matter what; in line with a saying by Mildred Barthel that ‘Happiness is a conscious choice, not an automatic response’! To further reinforce that happinessmis indeed a state of being Abraham Lincoln was quoted as saying that ‘Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds TO BE.

I believe our attitudes generally, towards all things we may be confronted with as we go through life; ultimately makes all of the difference in the grand scheme of things! And maybe, just maybe it was a good thing the Narrator had to travel through that long-winding oh so treacherous road in order that he/she may not only arrive at ‘destination redemption’; but he/she would better appreciate it….maybe; cause as Leslie Caron opines; and I quote…’In order to have great happiness, you have to have great pain and unhappiness-otherwise, how would you know when you’re happy’??? LOL

Great going Doc, the analogies and imageries are top notch and the attitude of the Narrator who’s gotten the unmitigated gall and gumption….the bada$$ attitude to darn right strip naked, bare it all and advance boldly, heedlessly…recklessly towards redemption is beyond uplifting! Love, love, LOVE it! 😎😁

      Thanks Yemie.
Happiness is being…to just be: comes from ceasing to struggle.

So, what do you think?
